The volcanoes of Berastagi and the spectacular Lake Toba are not to be missed on a visit to North Sumatra. This tour is an ideal way to relax and explore after trekking or perfect for those interested in experiencing some of the different landscapes and cultures of North Sumatra.

Take an early morning hike up Sibayak volcano and be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Sinabung volcano, which is the larger of the two peaks has seen some activity in recent years. If you can spare some more time it is possible to take a walk around this area to see the impact of its activity on neighbouring villages.

Lake Toba is one of Sumatra main attractions and among the most idyllic spots in Southeast Asia. Beaches are lined with pine trees and scenic mountains slopes surround the lake. Whilst in Lake Toba stay on Samosir Island where you can experience some of the fascinating Batak Toba culture.

Lake Toba is a huge caldera lake which is over 100km long and 30km wide. Not only is it the largest lake in Indonesia, it is the largest Volcanic Lake in the world. It was the site of a massive supervolcanic eruption that occurred 69,000 to 77,000 years ago, representing a climate-changing event. At 640 square kilometres (247 sq mi), Samosir is the largest island within an island, and the fifth largest lake island in the world. It also contains two smaller lakes, Lake Sidihoni and Lake Aek Natonang.

•  Day One

Travel by private transportation from Bukit Lawang or Medan to Berastagi. Check into guesthouse accommodation. Take a walk or drive up to to Gundaling hill for a panoramic view of volcanoes Sinabung and Sibayak.

If enough time, visit the famous fruit market of Berastagi and sample some of the delicious passion fruit or visit a traditional Batak Karo house.

•  Day Two

Take an early morning hike up to the summit of Sibayak volcano from where you can take in panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The volcano is high in geothermal activity with fuming vents spewing out crystalline sulphur which was mined on a small scale in the past. Visit some hot springs on the descent.

After lunch embark on the picturesque journey through pine forest, terraced plantations and verdant meadows to Lake Toba, stopping at the magnificent Sipiso Piso waterfall en route. At 120m high Spiso Piso waterfall is the highest waterfall in Indonesia. Arrive at Parapat harbour and take the ferry across to Samosir Island.

Check into guesthouse accommodation next to the lake.

•  Day Three-Five

Lake Toba is a perfect place to kick back and relax. Spend as many days as you like taking full advantage of the revitalising and invigorating scenery of the lake. Enjoy evenings being entertained by traditional Batak Karo musicians and day times exploring the island. We can organise tours and trekking around the lake, if required.

Of special interest in this area are the small museum and cultural center at Simanindo and a local Batak king's residence at Ambarita. Also take the opportunity to visit a traditional Batak Toba house, a traditional dance, traditional tombs and a sarong maker. It is also possible to visit the local market or just kick back and swim and relax by the lake.

It is also possible to hire bikes to tour around the local area or see some of the sights on foot by trekking from Ambarita to Pangururan. Another enjoyable trek, with some stunning views is to a smaller lake called Danau Sidihoni. Please contact us for more information.

(The car and driver will be at your disposal for the duration of your stay in Lake Toba so you can decide how much or how little you want to do)
