For those looking to escape the traveler trail and achieve a truly authentic jungle village experience look no further than Besitang for an exciting 3 day trip.
Take a 1 hour canoe ride through the jungle to the only guesthouse in the area. Help out with washing the jungle patrol elephants and take a 1 hour ride through the jungle. Take time out to do some bird watching and visit the local villages for an insight into Batak culture.
This area supports a wealth of wildlife such as wild orangutans, gibbons, siameng, monkeys and many different species of birds. There are frequent reports of visits from wild sumatran elephants and indeed the patrol elephants are also used to drive wild elephant visitors from the village area.
ITINERARY :
Day One
Pick up from Medan or Bukit Lawang and journey 3 hours direct to Tekong village. Journey 45 minutes by canoe up Besitang River the guesthouse. Depending upon arrival time take a walk to the village of Aras Napal Kiri and explore the surroundings.
Day Two
Rise early and take a walk into the jungle for some bird watching and wildlife spotting. Return to the guesthouse for breakfast. Spend some time watching the elephants and interacting with them under the guidance of the mahouts. In the afternoon explore another local village area. (Aras Napal Kanan)
Day Three
After breakfast return by canoe to Tekong village. Journey 3 hours back to Medan or Bukit Lawang
It is also possible to go trekking in Besitang for anything from a few hours to a few days.
Besitang is an area of conservation and restoration on the border of Gunung Leuser National Park. Tourism has recently been introduced to this area by Yayasan Leuser International (YLI) to give impetus to its conservation efforts and enable the community to benefit from the rain forest in a positive way, whilst raising awareness of environment issues.
There is very little tourist infrastructure in this area. There is one guesthouse, which provides basic rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Meals are included in the price and will consist of wholesome Indonesian food.
